Serbia: Student Protest Intensify as Thousands Gather in Kragujevac

By February 16, 2025No Comments

Description: The three – month protest spree has continued in the city of Kragujevac as student protest amassed and grew larger by the day. The protests, instigated by the fatal disaster of a railway canopy in Novi Sad, have gained serious traction and are becoming increasingly threatening towards President Aleksandar Vucic’s political establishment. The students were joined by farmers and teachers as their demands have remained adamant and unchanged. The protesters demanded from Vucic’s government a public and transparent probe into the investigation regarding the accident and have also accused the entire political establishment of grand – corruption.

Impact: Three months after the fatal accident in Novi Sad, the protest has become a large civil movement for change in Serbia that could topple the existing government. Serbia is currently at several crossroads as its European aspirations are sequestrated by their warm bilateral relations with Russia and there also exists the ever-lasting unresolved question of Kosovo. The country could face a severe political crisis in the upcoming months as President Vucic’s sympathizers mobilized as well. Serbia’s porous political and civil state of affairs could backtrack the country’s international hurdles, and plunge Serbia into a prolonged multi – pronged crisis which could have a potential impact on the stability of the Balkan region.
