Serbia: Anti – Government Protesters Amassed in Belgrade

By March 15, 2025No Comments

Description: The largest gathering in what has been the biggest civil movement in Serbia finalized on 15 Mar where anti – government protesters blocked the Serbian capital demanding responsibility and accountability. The protests initialized by the fatal Novi Sad canopy tragedy which left 15 people dead, were mainly aimed at tackling systemic corruption and uprooting a system which protected the powerful and the privileged. Minor incidents were reported despite mounting concerns of the possibility for the protests to turn violent due to provocation from the pro – government organizers. Over four months the initially student organized movement constantly presented a threat towards President Aleksandar Vucic and his administration. The Belgrade gathering, although impactful, shed little light on what comes next as Vucic’s government remained largely intact.

Impact: Serbia’s student initialized protests attracted the world’s attention in what was generally labeled as the rebirth of democratic tackling of social issues. The concerning factor is the lack of strategy and organization going forward as the sitting government aimed to maneuver out of the growing political crisis. The final gathering in Belgrade emphasized the gravity of the situation in the Serbian civil society as severe reforms are expected from President Vucic’s administration. Political apathy and social myopia from the sitting government could plunge the country into a lengthy pro and anti – administration battle as no rapport has been so far established between the government and the protesters.
