Sudan: Clashes between the RSF and the Sudanese Military Intensify

By January 23, 2025No Comments

Description: The armed conflict in Sudan further intensifies as the Sudanese military clashed with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) near an oil refinery close to the capital Khartoum. Fighting was also reported in the province of El – Fasher and the northern parts of Khartoum. South Sudan has suspended all social media platforms in the country as video footage of the fighting appeared on Facebook and TikTok. The UN refugee agency has reported that up to 12 million people were displaced since the conflict started in 2023.

Impact: Further clashes between the military and the RSF would enlarge the Sudanese humanitarian crisis while the conflict could spill into neighboring South Sudan threatening to have regional security and humanitarian ramifications. The conflict should be closely monitored as a resolute action from the international community, primarily the UN is necessary in order for the armed conflict to stop. The Sudanese army has enjoyed several successful advances in the past couple of months but failed to seriously undermine the RSF militarily, shedding indication on a prolonged armed conflict in the country, and worsening of the already spread humanitarian crisis.
